Brief history

The Graduate Program in Agroecology and Sustainable Rural Development aims to train professionals with high scientific and technological qualifications. Based on the foundations provided by Agroecology, as a new area of scientific knowledge based on the interdisciplinary approach, it involves theoretical, practical and methodological aspects. The program is based on a tripod that contemplates the social, environmental and economic relations present in the agricultural production of family and peasant agriculture, in the perspective of sustainable rural development and in support of decision making regarding the formulation and management of public policies. The Graduate Program, organized in two lines of research, has as its focus area Agroecology and Sustainable Rural Development.

The area consists of studies and research integrating the theoretical, practical and methodological aspects of Agroecology as a science of the field of complexity, built from the “hybridization” of knowledge (scientific knowledge in interaction with the knowledge of farmers). It also discusses the relationship between Agroecology and the processes and strategies of sustainable rural development, with emphasis on the socio-environmental dynamics of reality, considering economic aspects in rural areas, sovereignty and food security issues and public policies.
